Penguins Crushed by Sens....

The Pittsburgh Penguins took a major step backwards last night as they were beaten 6-3 by the Ottawa Senators. All of the good things that they had been doing during the early part of the season and their winning streak went right out the window. The most glaring issue seemed to stem from the Defense and it's inability to control Ottawa's forwards. Who dominated the game from start to finish.

Dany Heatley, Daniel Alfredsson and Jason Spezza combined for 7 pts and had their way in the offensive zone, but they weren't the only ones wheeling and dealing around the Penguins this evening. The Ottawa defense accounted for 10 of the 44 shots against goaltender Marc Andre Fleury and accounted for 4 pts, 2 of which were goals.

The popular opinion in Pittsburgh is that Marc Andre Fleury did not play a good game. I don't agree. Granted, he may of let in a bad goal or two, if not for his play this embarrassing game could have been even worse. The Senators had close to 20 prime scoring chance, I stopped keeping track after it hit 18. It was the same old story with this Ottawa team who have won more often than not in Pittsburgh over the past 5 years.

If there were any bright spots on the evening, it has to be Evgeni Malkin and Max Talbot. Malkin was able to get back on the score sheet with 1 G 1 A and played a good game all around, his first since the win in LA. Talbot was his usual self, flying around the ice, hitting people, blocking shots and even scoring a late goal on a superb individual effort.

The schedule gets no easier for the Penguins as they head into Carolina tonight, and face a Flyers team Monday, who can't be pleased having dropped two in a row to the Penguins and is struggling through one of it's worse starts in history.

Chris Thorburn, who started the previous game on a line with Sidney Crosby, was a healthy scratch. Amazing how one game during a losing streak can change things.

There were 5 scouts in attendance at the Pens game against the lightning Wednesday night and 4 again last night. Could they be involved in any of the rumored activity around the league, I guess we will find out!
